Appointments, Appointments and More Appointments

Image
It has been a busy week of running all over for appointments again. The appointments have gone really well with our therapist and counselor. We also saw the doctor for a one month medicine check. I told him that she seems happier and her raging anger has become less since being on her medication. He asked if I felt I wanted to raise the dosage and I then said I feel the Holidays are crazy enough that I felt we should wait until after the New Year to see how she was handling the medication and then decide. The doctor agreed that the Holidays can be very stressful for kids with behavior issues and trauma. I also got our next appointment 12 miles away from us instead of having to drive 45 miles away to see the doctor. That was a huge WIN right there!! We had some time on Monday after an appointment to go shoe shopping for theatre shoes that she will need in two weeks for her winter program. We got to the shoe section in the store and she immediately picked up a pair of boots from...

Thanksgiving Camping Trip

The kids and I (Chris was working) left on Wednesday to go camping at Martin Creek SP near Tatum, Tx. We knew it was going to rain but decided to go for it anyways. We arrived and set up a few things and then took to the trails since we knew by Wednesday night it would be raining. The sunset was so beautiful that evening when we were finishing out on the trails and headed back to our camp site. Thursday morning quickly became a day like any other day with Kinzy. She got mad that we were going to do our own 5K around the park and began her nastiness. We had already discussed that we all wanted to do this and it would be fun. She began running her mouth with not so nice words coming out of it and made a couple of threats towards me again. Thankfully Dexter was there again to hear these threats. We finished our walk and relaxed under the canopy for most of the day reading and talking. The rain stopped during the night with Friday being dry but cloudy all day. The kids met some g...

Happiness and Hope

It has been about 10 days since I last posted. We met with the doctor at The Andrews Center which went very well. He added a diagnosis of DMDD(Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder) to her medical chart. The doctor did this in order to prescribe medication as there is no known medication listed to treat RAD's. He was also having problems with medications for behavior because most increase your appetite and that is definitely not what we want to do. So as of today Kinzy has been on medication for 12 days and we can definitely tell a difference at home. I did ask her last week after being on it for 6 days if she herself could tell a difference or is she felt weird just so we could keep track of this for the doctor and nurse. Kinzy responded that she felt happier so that is a huge step in the right direction. We are continuing to meet with the dietitian and eating disorder specialist alternating every other week. Every Wednesday we are working with the counselor at our home. ...

Busy Week

Image
We have had a crazy busy week with lots of appointments for Kinzy. I really feel that we are finally getting some help with her and not being pushed aside or looked at like we are the crazy ones. I ran all over East Texas for 4 days this weeks getting Kinzy to appointments while also fitting in all of our normal routine and school. She did really well with all the appointments and talked when asked questions. I decided to order groceries online to pick up on Monday when we have to be back at appointments in Tyler. I have never done this but feel it may help me out as this past week I had no free time. A few of the appointments ran much longer then expected and then we had to rush to get to other appointments so shopping was put aside. I didn't want to make an extra trip over the weekend so that I could also get things done at home that I was behind on. We have only had 1 day this week of Kinzy having a day of raging anger so that is a plus. She has really handled all of this very ...

RAD Mom Retreat

Image
I spent last Thursday to Sunday in Jemez Springs, NM with 6 wonderful ladies from all over the U.S. at a RAD Mom Retreat. This was a last minute trip that I heard about two weeks ago. Chris was off this past weekend so it all worked out or I would not have gone. Chris took the kids camping while I was away. The retreat was held at Canon del Rio. When we arrived Thursday afternoon it was snowing over the mountain behind the inn. It was so beautiful and the fall colors were so vibrant. The weekend was filled with laughter, tears and fellowship with the ladies I had just met but felt like I had known my whole life. We were all going through the same issues with our children. Some of the kids had been adopted from foster care and others were internationally adopted from Ukraine, Russia and China. Our stories were all so similar it was scary. Some have older children and have gone through more then we are but then some were the same age as Kinzy and going through the same issue...

Clearing of the bedroom

Image
It was time to make a change. We have had some really some rough nights when food wrappers or when food is found. Last night I went into her room to grab another blanket from the extra closet. When she asked what I was doing, the look on her face told me I should investigate. Well that led to the decision to clear her room today and start fresh. Dexter and I worked hard to clear everything out of her room. We started with the mattresses and found urine in plastic containers under her bed. We have had this issue before. She used to sit on the carpet and do her business. We found a lot more wrappers and several jars of peanut butter, some totally wiped clean and then others just started. We cleared 2 large and 1 regular garbage bag of wrappers and stuff that was put into anything that would hold it. Items were stuffed in socks, stuffed animals, wrapped in blankets and sheets. I have 2 heaping piles of dirty laundry and blankets/sheets to wash. I know this will not fix our ...

RAD

I wanted to share a couple of books that we have read. Highly recommend them as they pertain to RAD's. This week has been the same as far as behavior with Kinzy. My goal with her and school is to get her graduated either by her doing the school work or her getting a GED in the future unless things drastically change for her. She only likes spelling and reading as far as subjects. Quiz and test time are a trigger for sending her into rage time, well actually most of her school days are like this. I always tell her 2-3 days inadvance about a quiz or test but she choses to not study and then it is all my fault for her not getting any questions correct. Today I am going to give her a chance to maybe do the right thing and focus on her test. If she can get a passing grade I am going to take her to Sonic this afternoon for a slush. This is not something I have done before but willing to try as she is obsessed with food and would not want to miss out on a slush. Trying to give h...
